Compose Yourself
Thanks to funding from Northamptonshire County Council’s Voluntary Sector Support Unit, 45 children in 4 schools composed and recorded their own songs, as part of this project to target young people’s self-esteem. The participants wrote songs on a range of themes, including bullying, friendship and family. Danielle from Kettering chose to dedicate her song to her father, who had passed away the previous year. This song not only helped Danielle to express her feelings, but had a profound impact on all who heard it. As a result, Danielle appeared as “Person of the Week” in her local newspaper! (To hear Danielle’s song, search for “Daddy” in our song library.) Other project participants from Lumbertubs Primary School in Northampton also appeared in their local paper, as they were invited to perform their song at the Northamptonshire Association of Youth Clubs Leaders’ Dinner. Another group of participants, pupils from Arbours Primary School in Northampton, were interviewed by BBC Radio Northampton, who also broadcast their songs.
