Jazz Project

Jazz Crusade 2013
In our second crusade, we worked with singer/songwriter and Patron to The Notivate Trust, Martyna Wren.

We ran 16 workshops and assemblies in primary schools across Northamptonshire, featuring some of Martyna’s ensemble: Ben Lewis (Vibes), Gudny Jonasdottir (Cello) and John Bowman (Piano/MD).

Here are a few photos from the tour:

Martyna’s full band also performed live in various public concerts across the region, including Mike Clowes (Drums), Loz Garratt (Bass) and Reuben Fowler (Trumpet/Flugelhorn).

Here’s a sample of Martyna in action at The Castle Theatre in Wellingborough:

Jazz Crusade 2012
In first crusade, we visited 15 schools and youth clubs across Northamptonshire with Kwabena Adjepong and the Chris Eldred Trio from London, featuring local saxophone sensation, Tom Barford – introducing 2300 young people to “live” Jazz. Each visit included a performance by the band, a short improvisation workshop and Q&A session. The week ended with a stunning performance by the band at Spinney Theatre in Northampton.
Here are the amazing musicians involved:
Loz Garratt (Bass), Mike Clowes (Drums) [20th – 21st Feb], Dave Elliott (Drums) [22nd – 24th Feb], Chris Eldred (Piano), Kwabena Adjepong (Vocals),Tom Barford (Sax)

The punishing schedule got to the band every now and then…

Here’s a list of the venues we visted:
Brixworth Primary School, Moulton Primary School, Ennerdale Youth Club (Corby), St Brendan’s School (Corby), Kingswood School (Corby), Abington Vale Primary School (Northampton), Boughton Primary School, Overstone Primary School, Ecton Village Youth Club, Rowan Gate Special School (Wellingborough), Lings Primary School (Northampton), Grange Park Youth Club (Northampton), Eastfield Primary School (Northampton), Ecton Brook Primary School (Northampton) and Northampton School For Girls.

Feedback included:
“A big thank you for giving us the opportunity to enjoy the jazz musicians. They blew us all away!”
“The children were mesmerised!”
“The children absolutely loved it – staff too! Huge thanks for organising it.”
“There’s so much jazz going on. Northants has gone very cool. Nice one Notivate. See what you’ve done!”
“What a fantastic event, right on our doorstep, with extremely musically talented young people.”

Jazz Workout
Following the success of previous days (see below), we organised a Jazz Improvisation Day at the Music School in Northampton on 24th October 2011. This was mainly for members of the various ensembles at Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Service – and was led by the Chris Eldred Trio and the inspirational Kwabena Adjepong.

These activities were generously supported by

Following discussions with our Youth Advisors, other local young people and music service providers – and thanks to the generous support of the Edna Newill Charitable Trust – we organised a series of activies to encourage young people interested in Jazz:

Jazz Improvisation Days (2009 and 2010)
The trustees are very grateful to the Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Service for allowing us to use their music centre for these activities.

On Sunday 21st June 2009 and 26th September 2010, young musicians participated in a day-long programme of workshops designed to increase their confidence on their chosen instruments, by developing their improvisation skills.

These workshops were led by Nick Weldon, John Bowman, Will Osborne, Trevor Tomkins, Mark Lockheart and the late Jeff Clyne.

The evening concerts were very well attended by friends and family. They included solo improvisations by all participants, interspersed with performances by the leaders.

A big “thank you” to all those who volunteered to help make the days such a success.

Primary Schools’ Jazz Tour
In 2010 we began a tour of Northamptonshire primary schools, introducing young people to jazz. Pupils at Castle and Thorplands Primary Schools were treated to concerts and workshops by the London-based Chris Eldred Trio, with special guest saxophonist Tom Barford. We are very fortunate to be working with such fantastic musicians.

If you’d like us to visit your school, or would like more information, please get in touch.
