SCHOOL WORK
The Notivate Singer/Songwriter Programme is a creative music course for children aged 9 – 13 years, in which they write and record their own songs. The programme enables children to express themselves, explore their feelings and perhaps try something for the first time. It offers children the chance to feel better about themselves and is about music, but is more about “me”.
There are six fun, practical sessions, carefully designed to encourage children to realise their creative potential and expand their emotional awareness. Sometimes children have particular concerns that they need to share, or opinions that need to be heard, so we have developed programmes that focus on specific issues, including:
- Bullying
- Racism
- Corruption
- Illness
- Bereavement
Based on 20 years’ experience of working with 7,000 children, recording 1,700 songs in partnership with over 100 schools in Europe and Africa, the Notivate Programme helps to increase self-esteem, willingness to take creative risks and confidence to learn. Other benefits include:
- Helping in the development of language and listening;
- Contributing to better mental and physical health;
- Promoting learning and general attainment;
- Encouraging listening and social skills;
- Strengthening relationships.
The scheme of work allows for opportunities to observe, assess and address issues such as pupil behaviour, relationships and learning styles, impacting areas outside the traditional music curriculum.
As well as providing our own trained music leaders, we offer opportunities for music specialists to train as Notivate leaders in their own school.
“I have seen countless times the magic that the Notivate Singer/Songwriter project brings and the way that it enables and encourages young people to express themselves and gives often well-hidden emotions a voice. Each time the project has had an incredible impact on the children and challenged the adults’ views of what can be achieved with children of all backgrounds and abilities. Many of the issues that are influencing our young people are trauma based, often hidden well within the individual and we have seen how the program enables this pent-up worry and need to be released and communicated. Quite purposefully, the program enables children to develop their oracy skills and gives these young people their voice to be able to speak about issues close to their heart and share their emotions and thoughts. This has been remarkable when used directly with individuals that may struggle with speech and language issues themselves. The results have been staggering. Children’s emotional literacy is significantly developed. Children understand themselves better, and can articulate their thoughts and emotions and how they can work best with others. We have seen confidence rocket and students are happy to share their thoughts and feelings more readily. I cannot recommend the program and the team’s work highly enough for engagement and outcomes for pupils.”

“Some of our Year 6 children were fortunate to experience Notivate this term where they had a chance to write, rehearse and record their own songs. They had an amazing day at The Stables in Milton Keynes and I am confident they will have made many memories they will treasure for a long time.”
Mrs Marsh (Brixworth CEVC Primary School)
“As we entered the stunning stables, John (our Notivate leader) greeted us warmly into this, once in a lifetime chance to express our ideas in music. What an achievement! Thank you Notivate.”
Benjamin (Year 6)
We also offer one-day, on-site composing and recording days for groups, which can be based around particular themes. We regularly work with RSC Associate Schools to enable children to produce music inspired by Shakespeare’s plays. Recent projects include The Tempest, Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, Henry V and The Merchant Of Venice.
